About Acoustic Guitar Amps

Acoustic Guitar Amps are that strange thing: the better the amp, the less you’re aware of it. The end goal for acoustic amplification is total transparency; simply your acoustic guitar, louder.

Acoustic amps tend to be an all-in-one solution for singer-songwriters, allowing you to plug in a microphone and backing track as well as your guitar. They will be loud enough for use in small venues, cafes and pubs. In larger venues acoustic guitar amplifiers operate like your personal mixing desk, enabling you to dial in your own perfect tone before running via XLR di output out into the PA.

The industry standard for many years has been the AER Compact 60 but there are many other options including Roland and Blackstar. Many will include a three band eq and controllable reverb levels to ensure your acoustic amplifier can be shaped to your needs.

There are a number of battery powered acoustic amps on the market, chief among them the ubiquitous Roland Street Cube. These are ideal for buskers who need their sound to carry far and wide while still having control over their tone. Singer songwriters also appreciate an acoustic guitar amplifier with a microphone input along with a guitar channel. This gives two channels for balancing levels to achieve the perfect acoustic guitar tone.

Acoustic amps are also rewarding for home practice. This is less because of the volume they generate as they have a smaller speaker size and more because of the opportunity to play with inspiring onboard effects and loopers. Some also benefit from usb recording, a high pass filter, bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary input.

Why Should I Choose an Acoustic Guitar Amp?

  • All-in-one solution for singer-songwriters
  • Battery powered options for busking
  • Practice and perform with inspiring effects

Frequently Asked Questions about Acoustic Guitar Amps

Question: What amp should I use for acoustic guitar?
For simple home use amps such as the Yamaha THR5A or Fender Acoustasonic 15 are great choices. For larger spaces the Blackstar Sonnet 60 Watt produces multiple input channel with independent tone and effects as well as anti-feedback controls.
Question: Do acoustic guitars need acoustic amps?
No, acoustic guitars do not need acoustic amps but they are very helpful for gigging players who wish to easily amplify their sound more.
Question: Is there a difference between electric and acoustic amps?
Yes electric and acoustic amps are designed very differently to handle different frequencies, outputs, and applications.
Question: What type of microphone should I use for my vocals with an acoustic guitar amp?
We'd say go for a good quality dynamic mic. Certain acoustic amps may supply the phantom power required to run a condenser mic. However, these are very sensitive pieces of gear and not necessarily what we'd suggest using. A dynamic mic needs extra power and will serve you well. The famous one is the Shure SM58 but there are lots to choose from by brands including SE, Sennheiser and Electro-Voice.
Question: I want to go busking with my acoustic guitar but I need an amp. Do any run on batteries?
Yes they do! The most popular amps for this purpose are the Roland Cube Street and the Cube Street EX. Whilst these are not strictly acoustic amps, they do have a facility for both acoustic guitars and vocals. They are louder than they look and they can run on batteries!
Question: What is the best selling acoustic amp?
The acoustic amp that sells the most is the Fender Acoustasonic 15. This is a great acoustic practice amp. The next best selling is the Marshall AS50D, a popular choice for gigging guitar players.
Question: I want an amp for playing acoustic sets in pubs. How loud an acoustic amp do I need?
It's difficult to say but do remember that wattage refers to power only and not to volume. It may seem strange but a 100w amp is typically only twice as loud as a 10w amp! Some amps are more efficient than others too. Two 60w amps from different manufacturers can be wildly different in terms of volume. Volume is determined by decibels rather than wattage. Having said all that, we'd recommend getting the most powerful amp that's practical for you. More power means more clean headroom. This is a useful thing for acoustic artists because your sound will not be on the edge of distortion, even at louder settings.
Question: Can I use my electric guitar amp with my electro acoustic guitar?
Well, it won't do it any harm but it also won't sound great. In the short term you could use your electric guitar amp as a stop-gap measure. However in the long run, the sound will be unsatisfying and you'll no doubt want to get something more up to the job.
