About Banjos
Banjos are charming and charismatic and are all over American music from the advent of recorded music to contemporary chart toppers such as Taylor Swift, Kasey Musgraves and Mumford and Sons. The banjo has a distinctive percussive sound due to the fact they often use a drum head as the resonant membrane.
Most commonly associated with American roots such as country, folk and bluegrass music, the banjo comes in a few different varieties. The classic banjo is the five-string banjo. The construction of 5 string banjos can either be open-back, ‘frying pan’ style or closed-back with a wooden body like an acoustic guitar. Open back banjos are percussive and brash sounding. Closed-back banjos are much warmer and polished sounding.
Other banjo types include the tenor or ‘Irish’ banjo, 6 string banjo or banjo ukulele. The tenor banjo is a smaller, higher pitched banjo. The 6 string banjo and banjo ukulele are essentially a guitar and ukulele, respectively, but with the body of a banjo rather than a wooden body. We stock banjos from Barnes & Mullins Banjos, Ozark, Deering banjos and more.
