About Guitar Cabinets

Guitar Cabinets are used to plug into a guitar amp to amplify a guitars sound. Guitar cabinets or "cabs" for short, are enclosed speakers within a wooden case made to be paired with amps for projecting audio loud enough to be heard by an audience. Electric guitar cabinets are available in a huge variety of sizes and combinations. Choosing the right type for a guitarist depends on what situation the cab will be used in. Single 12" speaker cabinets are a popular choice when it comes to rehearsals or smaller gigs. This is due to the compact size making them easy to transport or store at home.

Guitar Cabinets take the sounds generated by an amp head and unleash them at your audience via specialised speakers. Speaker cabinets for electric guitars come in a variety of sizes and combinations. For performing in larger spaces, a "half stack" would be used. These are larger cabinets consisting of 2 rows of x2 12" speakers, often referred to as "412" or "4x12". Paired with an amp head these cabinets are loud and recognisable, even in looks, these give off a powerful impact which adds to a true rock star set up!

There are other types of cab, however. 212 cabs (two 12" speakers) are a very popular and practical choice for gigging players. Single 12" cabinets are now more popular than ever, mainly due to the proliferation of tiny 'lunchbox' guitar heads. These set ups make it easy and space efficient to enjoy great valve tone in your home.

Whatever your needs are, cabinet-wise, we have your back. guitarguitar is one of the largest musical instrument retailers in the UK and we have a vast and comprehensive selection of cabinets available in all shapes and sizes. We keep the major brands such as Marshall, Orange and Mesa Boogie but we also specialise in boutique amps and cabs, offering cabs from Suhr, PRS, Friedman and Victory Amps.

Guitar cabinets are made by many well known brands such as Fender, Marshall, Laney and Orange. These are available in many sizes and work well connected to amp heads. For the guitarist looking for something more specialist, there is also a range of boutique amps and cabs which can offer a bit extra, whether that's within the build quality, style or features. Brands such as Supro, Friedman and Victory Amps provide excellent selection on their boutique cabinets.

Why Should I Choose a Guitar Cabinet?

  • Excellent for live gigs
  • Range of brands to choose from
  • Variety in combinations and sizes
  • Great for live performances
  • Influences the sound and tone of an instrument

Frequently Asked Questions about Guitar Cabinets

Question: Do guitar cabinets make a difference?
Yes, guitar cabinets make a difference in sound of the electric guitar but most notably in the volume the guitar amp can be projected at.
Question: What is the benefit of a guitar cabinet?
There are great benefits to a guitar cabinet, especially when needing to play guitar at a louder volume, such as home practice, rehearsals, performing at events and live gigs.
Question: What is the difference between amplifier and cabinet?
There is a difference between an amplifier and cabinet . An amplifier when connected to an electric guitar, takes the electrical signal from the pickup when played. A cabinet is an enclosed loudspeaker which paired up allows the audio signal to be heard at volume.
Question: What makes a good guitar speaker cabinet?
There are a few features which make a guitar speaker cabinet good. This could be the build quality as they are usually paired up with amp heads and used for gigs. A strong construction can help to have a reliable set up.
Question: Is a 412 cab louder than a 212 cab?
No. This is because speaker cabinets do not possess any volume of their own. They are able to handle a certain power level and they put out sound in decibels but it is really the head that determines the level of power going into the cab. A more efficient cabinet will sound louder with the same head and the same settings than a less efficient cabinet. Other factors such as whether the cabinet has an open or closed back also change the actual and perceived volume.
Question: Can I use a speaker cabinet with any guitar amp?
You can use a speaker cabinet with any amp that features a 'speaker out' or 'ext. speaker' output jack. In these cases, you should be able to use any speaker cab that matches the ohmage of the amp. Just match the numbers and you'll be fine.
Question: Can any speaker be used as a guitar cabinet?
When using a guitar cabinet it is important to find a speaker that matches the requirements of your amplifier, to avoid any damage.
Question: Why do guitar cabinets have two inputs?
Guitar cabinets with two parallel inputs can be used to connect a second cabinet into for even more projection in sound.
Question: How do you transport a guitar cabinet?
Transporting a guitar cabinet within a cover or a hard case shell can help maintain the amp life by keeping it safe when moving from place to place.
