What we say:

Fender’s new range for 2018 is the American Original Series. Replacing the previous American Vintage models, these guitars are all based on decade-specific eras, reflecting the best and most loved attributes from the 50s, 60s and 70s. These USA made models all share certain attributes like modern 9.5” radius fretboards and the same ‘vintage tall’ fretwire plus they are have the all-important nitrocellulose lacquer, a thinner skin finish that ages more beautifully and resonates better as the guitar is used and the wood vibrates. This new series is a total slam-dunk for Fender: some of their coolest, most iconic instruments with the features that everybody wants and asks for!

Realistically, there was one ever going to be one choice of look for the 50s Telecaster. More than any other guitar, the ‘Blackguard’ Tele uniform of Butterscotch Blonde with a single-ply black pickguard (hence the nickname) has been the most associated and celebrated choice: just ask Bruce Springsteen and Keith Richards! Fender realise this and so the 50s American Original Telecaster comes in this finish only.

That lovely Butterscotch and nitrocellulose lacquer covers a wonderful, grainy Ash body, further sealing the deal on the look as well as adding an open resonance and focus to the sound. The neck is a superbly butch U-shaped profile and it feels great: there is a real attitude attached to a Tele with a big fat neck, it’s just one of life’s great things! The 9.5” radius fingerboard is welcome though: it’s a kind of ‘best of both worlds’ situation here and playability is suitably infectious.

The two pickups chosen for this model are based on vintage 1952 units, the most classic year for Telecasters! There’s plenty of twang and poke on offer, ably helped along by the inclusion of brass barrel saddles in the bridge. This is no small matter: telecasters sound much more pronounced and sharp with the brass addition so it’s good to see this feature included. The neck pickup is much more useful than actual 50s Tele models: back then they were intentionally dark and muffled sounding but Fender have thankfully jettisoned that notion on favour of a sweet sounding single coil.

This is a fantastic addition to Fender’s catalogue. If you were sniffing around a new Telecaster anyway, this is very hard to beat!
