What we say:
Taylor guitars have been a major force in acoustic guitar building since the mid-70s. Founded by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, they are rightfully famed for incorporating computers, lasers and other modern precision manufacturing techniques to blend with traditional craftsmanship to create a new high quality for acoustic guitars.
The Academy Series is Taylor’s most accessible full-size line. Designed to be especially easy to play, each Academy series guitar has a beveled armrest for added comfort. This is normally a feature only seen on the absolute top-end Taylor guitars so it’s a refreshing and bold move to include them on such an affordable range.
This 12e model is a Grand Concert shape, made with a solid Sitka Spruce soundboard and an Ebony fingerboard. Taylor have ensured that the most important elements to playing - sound, feel and comfort - are preserved, whilst costs are kept down by using layered Sapele for the back & sides, keeping the finish Matte instead of more time-consuming and expensive Gloss and eschewing extra decorative elements in favour of a simple sound hole rosette and dot inlays. The neck shape, action, intonation and bracing are all precision made to ensure that, regardless of cost, these guitars really sing. The scale length is a good point of reference here: it’s slightly shorter at 24 7/8 of an inch so even that allows a little less tension across the strings and therefore an easier playing experience.
’E’ models like this one also have the excellent ES-B piezo pickup installed. This also includes a side-mounted onboard preamp with an onboard digital chromatic tuner. Taylor have thought of everything.
