About Taylor Guitars

Andy Powers playing a Taylor

The Taylor Difference

Why do people choose to play a Taylor guitar? We can think of lots of reasons. From our perspective, they all flow from the same wellspring: An underlying passion for improving the guitar-playing experience. That creative drive set a teenage Bob Taylor on a path of innovation nearly a half a century ago, and that push for continuous improvement laid the creative foundation of Taylor's culture, guiding their approach to everything they do. For anyone curious about what makes them unique, here are five things that players can count on.

A close up look at the Taylor playing experience

Playing Comfort

Easy-playing necks are a hallmark feature of a Taylor guitar and the gold standard of playability across the acoustic guitar industry. This makes their guitars more accessible to beginners, reducing hand fatigue and accelerating their progress. For seasoned players, the slim profile and comfortable string setup of Taylor necks translates into a fast feel that allows them to express themselves more fluidly.

Constant Innovation

With chief guitar designer Andy Powers at the helm, Taylor's drive to refine the sound of their guitars has led to a steady stream of tone-enhancing and award-winning designs, such as the patented V-Class ® bracing. This powerful tone-shaping platform allows Taylor to create a wide range of musically inspiring acoustic flavors, offering something for every skill level and style of player. For many pro musicians and recording engineers, having a Taylor means having a reliable tool to get the job done, whether for songwriting, recording or performance.

Precision Craftsmanship

A guitar design is only as good as the ability to produce it. One of Bob Taylor’s greatest accomplishments as a guitar maker has been his pioneering work to transform guitar making from its old-world heritage into an innovative manufacturing operation that enables Taylor to craft instruments with remarkable precision and consistency. Taylor has an entire tooling and engineering division devoted to making their latest guitar designs production-ready.

This includes everything from developing the software programs they use with sophisticated computer- controlled mills and robots to fabricating their own tools and machines to help their skilled craftspeople produce their guitars. That unique integration of technology, tooling and skilled hand-craftsmanship makes the Taylor guitar factory operation truly one of a kind. Not only does this allow them to imbue guitars with impeccable detail work, but the superb build quality gives players an heirloom-quality instrument.

Taylors commitment to sustainability

Sustainability Leadership

Taylor are deeply committed to safeguarding the future of the natural resources they use. Beyond the pursuit of ethical, socially responsible sourcing practices, Taylor has pioneered several innovative sustainability initiatives around the world. Flagship programs include the Ebony Project in Cameroon, which funds research about ebony’s ecology and has shaped a robust replanting initiative; Siglo Tonewoods in Hawaii, a collaboration with supply partner Pacific Rim Tonewoods to ensure a healthier future for koa by regenerating native forests.

Taylors commitment to sustainability

Taylor have also started a new Urban Wood initiative in tandem with an innovative California arborist to create new markets for wood from previously discarded trees that have been removed from municipal areas at the end of their life cycle. Not only does some of this wood make wonderful guitars, the project aims to support the re-greening of urban areas. Bob Taylor’s vision of environmental stewardship at Taylor also led him to hire a forest policy expert to become Taylor's Director of Natural Resource Sustainability, a unique position within the guitar industry.

Taylors commitment to support

Service & Support

Taylor is more than just a company that makes and sells guitars. They are equally passionate about providing the resources to support your guitar-playing journey, whether you need help choosing the right guitar or taking care of it. One of the best things about a well-made and well-maintained guitar is that it will continue to sound better over time, and they love helping Taylor owners enjoy their instruments to the fullest. From friendly service to expert repair, you can count on a lifetime of attentive Taylor support.

Taylor Guitars was founded in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug. Based in El Cajon, California, they are an innovative manufacturer of world class acoustic guitars. Taylor guitars are widely considered to be among the best sounding guitars available. They use a range of top quality woods which produce rich and natural tones.

Taylor have created many forward thinking design features for acoustic guitars, such as their revolutionary V-Class bracing and original body shapes and sizes. Their Expression System 2 (ES2) is available on many models and is a great option to have. You can find a Taylor acoustic guitar in the hands of many top artists in pop, country, rock and indie music - the most notable players include Jason Mraz and Shawn Mendez.

From classical guitars to the travel sized GS Mini and the masterpiece Presentation series with left handed options available, Taylor acoustic guitars are some of the finest money can buy. Whether you are a singer/songwriter after an electro acoustic or a pro player looking to get a special Builder's Edition model, there is a Taylor to suit every kind of guitarist. Complete your Taylor guitar with a brown, suede or leather guitar strap.

Why Should I Choose a Taylor Guitar?

  • A company with many innovative design features such as V-Class bracing
  • A range of original acoustic guitar body shapes and sizes to choose from
  • Perfect for live, studio and home use - especially the models featuring the ES2
  • Premium acoustic guitars with exceptional attention to detail

Frequently Asked Questions about Taylor Guitars

Question: What do the numbers mean on my Taylor?
Taylor have a numbering system that can help to identify the body shape and the wood used. The first digit in the model number refers to the series and most guitars in that series will use the same variety of wood for the back and sides. The second digit will tell you if the top is a softwood or hardwood. On a 6 string model, 1 is a softwood (such as spruce) and 2 is a hardwood (such as mahogany). The third digit is the body shape.
Question: Where are Taylor guitars made?
All Taylor guitars are made in one of two places; El Cajon, California or Tecate, Mexico. The Tecate made models represent fantastic value for money and allow even more players to get a genuine Taylor guitar.
Question: Which Taylor guitars are made in the USA?
The models from the Taylor 300 series and above are made in the USA at the El Cajon factory. These feature solid-wood back and sides and provide the very best level of craft that Taylor has to offer.
Question: Who plays Taylor guitars?
Pop and country acts such as Alan Jackson and Taylor Swift through to metal players like Tony Iommi and John Petrucci all play Taylor acoustic guitars.
Question: Are Taylor guitars handmade?
Taylor uses a combination of hand-craftmanship alongside innovative manufacturing techniques to create stunning guitars that are loved the world over.
