About Electro Acoustic Guitars

Electro acoustic guitars are simply acoustic guitars that are equipped with a pickup, and often a preamp, so that you can plug your acoustic guitar into an amp or PA for live performance. You can also use a pickup to record your acoustic guitar by plugging into an interface.

Electro acoustic guitars often have ‘cutaways’ which means that the body has been shaped so that you can access higher frets with ease. You rarely find cutaway designs without electronics, they tend to go hand in hand with one another. We have a variety of electro acoustic shapes available including small body, jumbo and dreadnought electro acoustic guitars.

The most common kind of acoustic pickup is a ‘piezo’. A piezo pickup is a thin magnetic strip which sits under the saddle, this is why they are often referred to as ‘undersaddle’ pickups. More elaborate pickup systems will involve a blend of multiple sound sources such as an internal condenser microphone or a face sensor.

Famous acoustic pickup brands are Fishman and LR Baggs and these are fitted as standard on a huge range of acoustic guitars including Gibson, Fender and Epiphone. There are many acoustic guitar brands who have developed their own pickup system. Particularly renowned among them are Taylor, Takamine and Cole Clark.

Why Should I Choose an Electro Acoustic Guitar?

  • Perfect solution for live performance
  • Handy tool for home recording
  • Often come with a cutaway for easy access to high frets

Frequently Asked Questions about Electro Acoustic Guitars

Question: Which strings are best for an electro acoustic guitar?
The best strings to use with an electro acoustic guitar are phosphor bronze because they have a warm sound which interacts nicely with a piezo pickup. Other strings such as 80/20 Bronze can sound brittle when amplified like this.
Question: Can an electro acoustic guitar sound like an electric?
Generally speaking, no. Even if plugged into an electric guitar amplifier, an electro acoustic guitar will still have a distinct acoustic character. That being said, the Fender Acoustasonic Series does exactly that. Thanks to some cutting-edge technology, Acoustasonic guitars are able to modern different acoustic sounds as well as electric guitars.
Question: Can an electro acoustic guitar be played without an amp?
Absolutely! The fact an acoustic is fitted with a pickup shouldn’t detract from its acoustic properties. It’s always the acoustic properties that are most important, even if you know you’ll plug it in most of the time.
Question: Can you learn to play guitar on an electro acoustic?
Yes, whether a guitar has electronics shouldn’t have any effect on how easy it is to play. In actual fact, electro acoustics can often be better to learn on thanks to common features such as cutaways and built-in tuners.
