About Fuzz Pedals
From smooth, vintage tones to all-out cacophony, fuzz pedals have been at the foot of every lover of noise since Jimi Hendrix.
Fuzz is the oldest and simplest type of guitar pedal. Because of this, it’s easy for pedal manufacturers to put their own unique spin on this simple effect. This means there is an overwhelming smorgasbord of fuzzy goodness available; from reproductions of vintage circuits like the Dunlop Fuzz Face and Electro Harmonix Big Muff to modern classics like the Z.Vex Fuzz Factory or Gamechanger Audio’s Plasma Pedal.
Fuzz pedals are extremely responsive to your guitar. It is quite common for guitar players to adjust how distorted the signal is simply by turning down the volume on their guitar. This makes fuzz pedals versatile and organic. Another interesting feature is that they change greatly based on the voltage. Players would often allow the battery to run low in order to create a more spitty, ‘gated’ sound. Modern fuzz pedals often replicate this by having a ‘Bias’ knob. This starves the pedal of voltage, without having to chew through batteries.
