Frequently Asked Questions about Podcast Equipment
Question: What equipment do you need for a podcast?
For starters you will need a microphone. These will generally feature an XLR connection. This can connect to many different devices. Recording to a computer is the most popular method. For this, you will also need an Audio Interface. This device enables you to connect XLR microphones to your computer. From there, all you need is a good set of headphones and some recording software to record and edit your podcast. With most audio interfaces, recording software will be included. This allows you to get going straight away. Alternatively, you can use a Multitrack Recorder like the Tascam DP-03SD or Zoom R8. Multitrack Recorders usually have XLR inputs, so you can connect a microphone directly. There are also products dedicated for podcast recording and editing. Some examples of this include the Rodecaster Pro and Zoom Podtrak P8.
Question: What extra equipment do I need for a 2 person podcast?
For a two person podcast, you will need an audio interface or recorder with at least two XLR inputs. From there you just need a second microphone and pair of headphones. If you plan to record even more than two people, just add a microphone and pair of headphones for each person. Just make sure your audio interface or recorder has enough XLR inputs. A headphone amp can be useful too, as it allows you to have more headphones connected. This allows everyone to hear things properly when recording.
Question: Do I need a dynamic or condenser microphone for podcasting?
While both options can do the job, we recommend choosing a dynamic microphone. Due to its close pick up range, it is less susceptible to room noise. You want your voice to be as clear as possible on a podcast, so minimizing any background noise is essential.
