What we say:

Fender’s Player Series is a fresh update of their most beloved models for today’s contemporary guitarist. The Player Series replaces the Mexican Standard Series and brings with it a host of exciting new features. Each Player Series guitar features 22 frets, new colours, a newly designed neck carve and upgraded pickups. Whatever style you play, you’ll be sure to find a favourite amongst the raft of new models available.

For the Player Series, the Jaguar has enjoyed a thorough re-appraisal, with a fantastic new Player Jaguar bringing plenty of versatility and potential to the range.

So, compared with a regular Fender jaguar, what is different here? Well, quite a lot to be honest! To begin with, you’ll find a Player Series humbucking pickup at the bridge position, joined by a more traditional single coil at the neck. The extra power available here is useful (and in a lot of cases, necessary) to modern players who need more chunk and sustain. The top horn contains a coil split switch to thin this back out to more recognisable Jaguar dimensions.

Speaking of the top horn, Jaguar fans will notice the lack of switches and control: the electronics have been slimmed down. The Player Jaguar has dispensed with the dual-circuit formula of traditional Jaguars to focus on providing more easily accessible sounds. On this subject, the Player Jag has also earned a 5-way blade switch for selecting pickups. This method is definitely more mainstream that the idiosyncratic Jaguar switching of old, and puts a wealth of tones right at your fingertips.

Other changes include a re-rendered body shape (more vintage correct) and that extra fret, with a 9.5” Fender-standard radius fingerboard that everybody gets on with. The scale length is still 24” though, and the tremolo is still Fender’s distinctive offset design found on Jaguars and Jazzmasters. These means that, a few changes aside, this still feels very much like a Jaguar. Good! Surely that’s the whole point? Jaguar fans love them for those reasons and Fender understand that.

This Jaguar is finished in 3 Colour Sunburst with a contrasting Black pickguard. Alternative music fans everywhere will love this up-to-date reworking of their favourite Fender.

This was the perfect treat for such a horrible year and my goodness did guitar guitar deliver I cannot thank them enough

Very good guitar, good sounds - rich neck pickup, bridge humbucker is good, but the coil tap option on it's own is very thin - great with both pickups selected though - the bridge humbucker's string spacing is too narrow - the poles don't line up with the strings. Shame this model doesn't come with the traditional 'rhythm circuit' on the upper bout, but I will be fitting one wired to include the 3 way selector (some body routing necessary, but the plate aligns perfectly!) The guitar is quite heavy, but feels well-balanced. Lovely, comfortable neck, but there is choking above the 14th fret - it needs a fret dress (quality control Fender?!!) The finish is very good with attractive grain to be seen through the sunburst finish. I'm replacing the black scratchplate with a white one, plus adding the fore-mentioned chrome plate - fully loaded on the upper bout. Tuners are the Fender Standard ones - I will be fitting my preferred split post tuners at a later date.
