What we say:
At A Glance:
Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (3rd Gen) is a rack-mountable USB audio interface that features eight combination inputs and 10 line outputs and is expandable to add an extra 8 ins and outs. 18i20 has many extra features including a built-in talkback microphone, four monitor outputs with anti-thump technology and two high-headroom instrument inputs that are great for guitars with active pickups. The Scarlett 18i20 is an excellent choice for producers and musicians looking to record drums and live instruments in studio quality.
If you're looking to being recording bands and require a USB audio interface with a generous amount of inputs and outputs, MIDI connectivity and SPDIF digital audio, plus the ability to expand over time, this is the interface for you.
Features We Love:
Eight Inputs
18i20 features eight combination inputs, suitable for use with XLR cables and TRS jacks, meaning you can connect both microphones and line-level instruments without the need for DI boxes. The front panel inputs have also been designed for use with guitars, if you like to use amp sims, these inputs will allow you to plug your guitar or bass straight into the 18i20 and record without the risk of clipping.
Ten Outputs
The ten outputs offer a lot of freedom in the studio, from generating multiple independent headphone mixes, to running effects sends or even sending stems to a mixing desk, 18i20 is a versatile interface that can adapt to your needs. The first four channels also feature anti-thump technology and speaker switching to make refining your mixes an easy and efficient process.
Expandable
If eight ins and ten outs aren't enough for you, it's easy to add an additional eight ins and outs via an ADAT interface like the Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic.
AIR
Activate Air to engage the All-analogue Air circuit, which switches the impedance to 2.2kΩ and adds two cumulative high shelves, totalling a 4dB boost in the high frequencies, recreating the sound of the classic Focusrite ISA 110 preamp which was commission by Sir George Martin for his iconic AIR studios. This essentially swaps the sound of your selected channel from the standard ultra-clear sound to an analog channel strip sound that makes drums pop and vocals shine.
