What we say:
Fender’s American Performer range brings an excellent selection of the most famous Fender designs, made in the USA, to players at great prices. Each Fender American Performer guitar has been specially designed to give gigging guitarists the tones and tools they need for excellent, high quality performances.
Special design features, custom wound pickups and fresh new finishes make this range stand out as one for players of all stripes to get behind. Fender USA quality at a budget friendly price: sounds perfect to us!
What range of Fender guitars would be complete without the Prodigal Son itself? The Stratocaster actually makes two appearances in the American Performer range, each with its own finish options. This one is the standard 3 single coil pickup model.
So, we all know about the Strat. What makes this version different? Let’s have a look.
There are lots of interesting tweaks here. First off, the pickups are new Yosemite units, hand-wound and made specially for this range. These pickups are relatively high in output and have a nice bold sound but still display plenty of that immortal Strat twang.
Fender have also included their excellent Greasebucket Tone circuit. The Greasebucket is basically a tone control that does its job properly: turning back the knob removes treble frequencies without ruining every other part of your sound like some standard tone circuits do! You’ll find yourself using the Tone knob a lot more than before when you have the Greasebucket in there!
Also, there is a neat addition to this Stratocaster model in the shape of a special push/pull pot on the bottom Tone knob. This brings in the neck pickup, regardless of the position of the 5 way blade. If we were being facetious, we’d call this the ‘Gilmour switch’: he is perhaps the most noted user of this particular mod. He’s quite right, it works brilliantly! You can enjoy lots of new sounds by blending the neck in with the other pickups.
Other features include a 70’s-style large headstock, jumbo frets on a 9.5” radius, modern C-profiled neck and some upgraded tuning machines. This, in other words, is a great package for all guitarists looking for a practical Strat that looks, sounds and feels brilliant. Add the USA provenance and the more than reasonable price and you have a pretty unstoppable deal right here!
This Strat is available in four finishes, this one being an attractive Honey Burst.
Condition ReportDeep scratch on back of body by treble side horn.
The American Performer Stratocaster includes the Yosemite™ single-coil pickups, designed for rich, expressive tones. With flat-staggered pole pieces to increase output and a shellac coating that lets the coil breathe while controlling feedback, Yosemite pickups produce dynamic sounds ideal for any musical situation. The American Performer Stratocaster also features Greasebucket™ tone circuitry and a push-pull tone control which adds the neck pickup in any switch position, unlocking new, musically useful tones. The “Modern C”-shaped neck sports a 9.5”-radius fingerboard that’s comfortable for almost any playing style, along with 22 jumbo frets for effortless and accurate bending.
