What we say:

Gibson’s new 2019 range of instruments is shaping up to be a classic year for electric guitars and basses. Doing away with the more outlandish experiments of recent years, Gibson have delivered a collection that gives guitar players everything they want!

The range is populated by iconic designs, built with all of the features and hardware choices that make sense on heritage-style instruments, in finishes that are well-regarded player favourites. It’s time to get excited about Gibson more than ever!

The Gibson Les Paul Studio has been a real favourite for gigging bands for several decades now. The design itself has seen a few changes over the years, but for 2019, the Studio is back to its most well-loved, stripped-back-for-action aesthetic.

The whole point of the Les Paul Studio is to keep all of the elements that make this guitar feel and sound like a Les Paul, but remove unnecessary decorative elements in order to make for a more affordable option. In other words, there is no binding anywhere and no Figuring on the Maple top. None of this affects your playing, of course! Lots of players, particularly of the heavier Rock persuasions, actually prefer this undecorated look, so why pay more for stuff you don’t need?

The construction is the classic Mahogany body and set Mahogany neck, with a gloss Nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The body has Ultra-Modern weight relief cavities, something that many guitarists with demanding schedules find to be a real benefit.

The nitro finish looks and feels superb, and is available in four finishes. This one is Tangerine Burst.

Gibson have opted for a ‘Slim Taper’ neck profile, in keeping with the other Modern Collection instruments. Les Paul fans will be instantly at home here, as will guitarists venturing over to Gibson for the first time from brands with slimmer-necked guitars! Gibson’s ‘slim’ is definitely more hefty than other brands but this neck proves to be an excellent ‘transition’ size, so Strat players who need a Les Paul in their armoury may find this to be a great choice!

The pickups are pretty hot sounding 490R and 498T models, the same pickups you’ll often find on Les Paul Customs. They sound large, confident and full of energy. You can also thin these out to a more P90-ish tone with the push/pull coil taps found in the volume knobs.

With much of the glamour and appeal of the Les Paul left intact, this ‘dressed down’ Les Paul Studio is a major hit for Gibson. Try one today!
