The New Strandberg Boden N2

Strandberg are already firmly established in the guitar world as notable innovators. What, then, is going to be part of this new model? What can they do to change up an already excellent instrument?

Well, if you’ve ever spoken to Ola Strandberg before - and I have, a couple of times - you’ll quickly learn that he is all about forward-thinking, and about movement. He’s the mastermind behind Strandberg’s many innovations, and he doesn’t seem to want to rest on his past success. The whole ethos for Strandberg in the beginning was about fixing problems presented by standard guitars. This meant rethinking the body shape, weight distribution, neck design and a hundred other things that accumulated in the original Boden design.

That ethos has remained in the years since Strandberg’s initial success. There are still things that can be improved, updated, refined and reconsidered.

This brings us to the new Strandberg Boden N2 models. There are two, the Boden N2 Original and the Boden N2 Standard.

So what’s new? I’ll look at each model in turn, though the new features are often applicable to both.

The Boden N2 Original. What’s New?

From a superficial glance, you may think that these are simply more regular Boden guitars. Not so! Here’s what has changed:

  • New Strandberg POWR:D by Fishman Pickups: collaboration pickups, made in America and featuring selectable voices. These are passive units and are used across the N2 Original range of guitars, in all string configurations.
  • Titanium reinforced Endurneck: the famous Endurneck design remains in all its chunky glory, this time reinforced with dual titanium rods, which also help out on resonance. The necks are made with roasted maple, and have birdseye maple fingerboards.
  • N2 Arched Body: the Boden body shape but with an arched top carve that adds to player comfort. The body is swamp ash, with chambers for weight relief and a veneer of flamed maple on top. The back is carved out in sweeping lines for greater comfort also.
  • EGS ARC hardware: this refers mainly to the new bridge, which now makes full contact with the body, meaning better signal transfer, more resonance again and higher levels of sustain.

The Strandberg Boden N2 Original is available at launch in two colours: Sunset Coral Burst Satin and Black Denim Burst Satin.

The Boden Standard N2

So, that was the N2 Original, and now for the Standard N2. The N2 arched body, reinforced neck and EGS ARC hardware is the same here, so I’ll not repeat those points. Here’s what’s different about the Standard N2:

  • Seymour Duncan pickups: inspired choices here: it’s the Pegasus/Sentient duo, which deliver a modern sound that’s well balanced and not overly high in output.
  • Basswood body: these guitars don’t have figured maple tops, and are not chambered. This means you can expect a different total palette to play with compared with the N2 Original, even before taking the pickups into account.
  • Metallic Finishes: at launch, there are two gorgeous metallic finishes to choose from: Transformative Teal Metallic or Black Satin Metallic.

A New Age of Strandberg

All in, I’d say that these new features are actually pretty significant. They are relatively subtle, but then Strandberg are a pretty subtle company, considering they make extended range, multiscale headless guitars!

If you’re already a fan, I can see these new updates really appealing to you. If you’ve yet to experience a Strandberg guitar, these might well be the best yet!
