What we say:
Straight out of Maryland and mentored by Ted McCarty, Paul Reed Smith has had quite a journey: from building one-off custom-built guitars and dodging past bouncers at gigs to show to big name artists to now: heading up one of the most revered and successful modern American guitar companies. Smith and his ever-growing company have a reputation for creating super-high quality players’ guitars that blend some of the greatest features found across the spectrum of electric guitar brands to produce what, in his eyes, is the ultimate axe. Players as diverse as Al De Meola, Carlos Santana, Dave Navarro and Stephen Wilson have sworn by PRS guitars for decades and more people are discovering the unique magic of these guitars every day. From simple, no-nonsense workhorses to exotic, exquisite dragon-jewel-inlaid works of art, PRS guitars have made their mark on the guitar world in a big way.
PRS’s CE (Classic Electric) takes the shape of their Custom 24 but swaps out the set neck for a bolted-on maple neck. This structural difference plays a significant part on the character of the sound: you can get a much snappier, choppy attack with an entirely different kind of response. Whether in humbucking mode with the formidable, vintage-voiced 85/15 pickups or in the slinkier coil-tapped single coil mode, the bolted neck gives an altogether different presence.
This neck is carved in a Pattern Thin profile, a PRS mainstay for 24 fret necks for a few years now. It’s a super comfortable shape that isn’t too skinny and has a satin nitrocellulose finish to a proper vintage feel.
This guitar has a figured maple top in a classic Tobacco Sunburst and is finished using PRS’s V12 finish. These versatile guitars are not ‘little brothers’ to the set neck Custom 24s etc, they are their own breed with their own distinctly brilliant sound.
The original CE was to introduced in 1988 and offered players PRS design and quality with the added snap and sparkle of traditional bolt-on guitars. Returning after nearly a decade of being out of the lineup, the CE 24 is back and better than ever. Check one out today.
