What we say:
Big Wreck's stupendously talented frontman Ian Thornley has been a Suhr user for a long time now. Suhr have recently rewarded his loyalty with a beautiful signature JM model spec'd up to his own preferences.
Ian Thornley needs to be able to go from sensitively picked arpeggios through to a T-style twang and up into fuzzed up octave riffs and spectacular soloing during a typical Big Wreck performance and the goal of this signature guitar was to be able to achieve it all with one instrument, by no means an easy task when you factor in the fact that Thornley is also a formidable slide player and wanted that taken care of too!
As you may expect, Suhr have risen to the task and smashed the target to pieces with this charismatic and superbly versatile instrument. This particular one in Seafoam Green with the Tonepros string-through-body hardtail bridge is Thornley's own favourite iteration of the guitar.
Beginning with that great offset body shape (made from Roasted Alder for lightness and extra resonance), Ian has opted for a Roasted Maple neck with a fairly hefty V-shaped profile. It's not as pronounced a V as, say, a typical '56 carve but it's by no means shallow and to be clear, it's SUPERB feeling! This is married to a 16" radius Indian Rosewood fingerboard for an overall feel that's both modern and retro at the same time. It's refreshing to feel and has a 'more-ish' quality: it most definitely promotes lots of playing! This is a great 'out of the box' combination that just works! The frets themselves are jumbo and stainless steel for a last-lasting, fast feel. This guitar is a real player!
Ian Thornley says himself that he wanted this guitar to be a "Leatherman of tone" and, accordingly, has tricked this guitar out with a variety of pickups and switching options. This H-S-H configuration has an SSH+ humbucker in the bridge, a V70 single coil in the bridge and an SSV humbucker in the neck. This already versatile set of options is expanded upon with a pair of parallel/series sliders for each humbucker and a 5-way blade selector for the pickups that includes a great two-humbuckers-at-once option. With all of this available, you can have your tone as skinny or as fat as you want!
The headstock is painted to match the body and uses Suhr's 'Hybrid' shape to increase what Thornley calls the 'overall snazz-factor'! It's definitely a guitar that looks great on stage.
Whichever styles you like to play in, the JM Ian Thornley can handle it without breaking a sweat. Have a try of this 'snazzcaster' and enjoy the incredible feel, sound and versatility.
