What we say:
Back in June, we took a special trip out to Nashville to look at some pieces of wood. More specifically, we went to Gibson’s Custom Shop premises in Nashville to hand-select the most staggering pieces of book-matched Flame Maple that Gibson had available in their stocks for our order of Custom Shop Les Paul Standards.
From a towering stack of 750 potential blanks we inspected, lifted and felt the weight of every single one in order to find the very best looking, lightest weighing slabs of maple they had. After many cups of coffee and a lot of hefting of wood, we were satisfied that we had picked out the 50 most dramatic and appropriate looking pieces to fill out our order. That was back in June…
Since then, we’ve had some stock arrive with us here in the UK and the quality and workmanship on this instrument is off the chart! We’re really excited to bring this to you.
The history of the ’58-60 Les Paul Standards is a story that could take up several pages so we’ll assume you’re up to speed on the legend! These new guitars are so close it’s unbelievable. ’59 Les Pauls tended to have a slightly slimmer neck than the previous year’s guitars but they still had heft: many guitarists think of the ’59 neck carve as being basically perfect. That is something the Gibson Custom Shop have paid particular attention to, as well as every other detail! Gibson know that these guitars will be heavily scrutinised and so every last detail is perfectly correct. This guitar is based on an existing ’59 Les Paul and can be found on specific pages of seminal reference book ‘The Beauty of the Burst’ by Yasuhiko Iwanade (page 62 if you have the book!). Les Paul aficionados across the world refer to this volume as being the definitive visual guide to these rare instruments so accuracy is paramount!
Looking at this 1959 Standard, we take in how the dish shape of the archtop is hand shaped and sanded to perfectly replicate the original dimensions and is finished in a specifically researched combination of shades to create the desired burst look. The additional VOS process is then added to give the beautiful patina of light ageing.
The lightweight one-piece mahogany body is hand picked and the neck has a long tenon (the part that fits into a carved cavity in the body rather like a deep ball-and-socket joint that improves sustain if it’s longer in length) that’s put in place with Hot Hide Glue for vintage verisimilitude. The plastic parts for the pickguard and so on are True Historic: in other words, Gibson have sourced and recreated the period-correct type of plastic! This is the level of historic recreation we’re talking about. It’s immense.
The neck itself (a single piece of lightweight and resonant mahogany just like the body) features a tube-less truss rod, again for vintage authenticity, and a single, thick piece of luxurious Indian Rosewood for the fretboard.
A pair a Custom Bucker pickups are the closest Gibson have ever gotten to that hallowed PAF sound that represents the apotheosis of Les Paul tone. Alnico III magnets and a moderate output are the way ahead: you need to hear the wood as well as the string to get that famous balance of heft and bloom that marks out a truly special Les Paul tone. This guitar sounds simply wonderful! It has sweetness and colour as well as thick, honeyed body and sustain. It sounds as it should: mythical.
This rare and exclusive Les Paul is the best of the best: the greatest craftsmen making the highest quality Les Paul guitars using truly exquisite woods and unbelievable hardware. This is a truly special example of the Gibson Les Paul.
