Walrus Audio is taking a quick break from creating stompboxes and power supplies to turn its attention to the rhythm section of the stage with an unexpected but exciting collaboration with renowned drummer and producer, Aaron Sterling, and is proud to announce the DFX-1 Percussion Processing Unit. The DFX-1 is a groundbreaking multi-effect built to give acoustic drummers, percussionists, and beatmakers full control over compression, delay, reverb, saturation, and EQ with any microphone setup, whether it’s on a snare, mono overhead, or a “smash” mic - all in one intuitive, performance-ready box.
“Designed for drummers, percussionists, and beatmakers who want to take matters into their own hands when it comes to effects. It allows a microphone to go straight into a world filled with gain, compression, delay, reverb, saturation, and EQ — without an external mic pre, without a mic-to-line level converter, and without extra cables. A true one-stop shop!” -Aaron Sterling
From tight, punchy snares to wide, atmospheric room sounds, the DFX-1 puts studio-level processing directly into your performance rig. Its high-performance mic preamp with phantom power, flexible routing options, and deep MIDI control make it equally at home on stage or in the studio. At the heart of the DFX-1 are three primary effect engines - Compression, Delay, and Reverb - each offering two unique modes for creative flexibility:
- Compression: Choose between a VCA circuit modeled after the API 2500 for mix “glue,” or a punchy FET compressor
inspired by the 1176 for bold, fast dynamics. - Delay: Move from warm, tape-style Vintage repeats to clean, articulate Modern digital delays.
- Reverb: Dial in classic Spring splash or lush Plate ambience for studio polish.
Shape your tone even further with asymmetrical saturation, tilt-style EQ, and detailed high, low, and mid-band control.
Other features:
- FX loop with customizable signal chain placement.
- Up to 9 on-board presets with up to 127 MIDI.
- Forward/Reverse button to change effect order.
- Three performance pads to bypass, preset cycling, and tap tempo.
- Connectivity with both XLR and ¼” inputs and outputs, +48 V phantom power, and line/instrument level switching,
MIDI in and thru, and USB-C for firmware updates. - Built Walrus Audio’s proprietary MDSP processing system.
