What we say:

BOSS's take on the phaser, the PH-3 not only offers a range of interesting options for using the phaser, the actual tonality and feel of the phased signal is pretty unique. It's definitely not another slavish copy of the famous 'script' sound form the 70s!

The 7 different modes include 4 'steps' with increasing levels of phasing (4, 8, 10 & 12) to go from relatively sensible to complete whoosh-overload! The next two modes are interesting: Rise and Fall. Part of modulation effects (when used relatively obviously) is hearing the 'sweep' of the effect go up and down in a continuous cycle: in either of these modes, the sweep appears to go continually in one direction (either up or down depending on your selection): it's a fairly bizarre thing to hear and we haven't come across any other pedals that offer this particular kind of phasing sound.

The final mode, 'Step', is a very interesting and musical effect. It's relatively hard to describe but if you've heard Muse's "Map of the Problematique" then you're pretty close to understanding this sound! It's a rhythmic sort of 'squaring-off' of the elements of the sweep so that each part sounds as an individual note. If you use it like a tremolo pedal on open chords, for example, it's very dramatic and unique sounding. Talking of tempo, hold the footswitch down for two seconds and then tap the footswitch accordingly to set your tempo!

BOSS have packed a lot into the PH-3 so it represents great value as well as great fun. It does eat up batteries though, so perhaps think about opting for the BOSS PSA power adaptor too!

My husband is in a Rock cover band. He used it at a gig last night and said it was excellent.
