What we say:
Since 1983, when Hans Nordelius invented the DPP1 Drum Pad (still a favourite with music technology connoisseurs), his company Clavia have designed and meticulously hand-made their own instruments including the incredible NORD keyboards in their workshop in Stockholm, Sweden. The first Nord Lead, released in 1995, was the product that really put Nords (and Clavia by extension) on the road to legendary status: the Lead’s game-changing take on virtual analogue synthesis really shook up the music/synth world with its design, sound, editing ability and sheer musicality. Since then, Clavia have not rested on their considerable laurels: a quick scan through the Nord timeline shows a range of professional instruments that offer innovation after innovation, all favouring real-time controls with a host of physical knobs and buttons over multiple menus and tedious scrolling through screens in order to edit parameters. Nords represent the high watermark of touring and gigging keyboards with models to suit players of all genres.
Nord's Stage 3 is perhaps the ultimate performance keyboard for keys players who need a handful of exceptional sounds at their fingertips with lots of real-time control and a feel that's unparalleled. This powerful and elegant performance instrument gathers it's sound into three distinct groups: Piano, Organ and Synth. Each group has it's own distinct set of control knobs and buttons to allow you maximum hands-on control over your set.
The Nord Stage 3 comes in a few different sizes and key types. This popular model is the Compact. This model is, whilst still relatively large, a lot more portable than other models and has 73 semi-weighted keys, giving you the best compromise for playing organ, piano and synth parts on the one keyboard. Not every player requires the full complement of 88 keys and the space saved by chopping off an octave's worth of notes is enough to prove a big benefit to those who are carrying their instruments from gig to gig, often in public transport.
So, each section then. The organ group has a set of red LED strips to represent the drawbars of your chosen organ model, of which you can choose between B-3, Vox, Farfisa and two types of pipe organ. A rotary speaker emulation is available on this too.
The piano section has some incredible models including a grand, electric, upright, clav, digital and a layer mode. These can then be personalised with further features like string resonance, detune, brilliance and brightness.
The synth section is a fully fledged analogue modelling synth with oscillators, ADSR, LFO's and the ability also to bring in sampled instruments from Nord's extensive (and growing all the time!) online sample library. There's an impressive amount of control for the synth section and remember, you can layer and split sounds, too! A comprehensive effects section follows with a very straightforward procedure for adding effects to your sound.
So far we haven't mentioned menus and scrolling through screens. That's because that hardly ever happens on the Nord Stage 3! Some deeper edits and utility-based functions require a little sifting through but it's truly few and far between. Nearly everything you need is right at your fingertips with either a dedicated knob or as a simple 'shift' function. This kind of power does not normally come this easy!
If you're a gigging pro, you have probably already encountered a Nord Stage: if you haven't, it's high time you did.
