What we say:

Gibson’s new 2019 range of instruments is shaping up to be a classic year for electric guitars and basses. Doing away with the more outlandish experiments of recent years, Gibson have delivered a collection that gives guitar players everything they want!

The range is populated by iconic designs, built with all of the features and hardware choices that make sense on heritage-style instruments, in finishes that are well-regarded player favourites. It’s time to get excited about Gibson more than ever!

A ’61 style SG with a Maestro Vibrola unit is one charismatic guitar for sure. Gibson obviously agree since they have opted to include one in their game-changing Original Collection!

This guitar is based on the historic SG from 1961. It is noted for having not only the smaller pickguard but also a slimmer, narrower neck. This neck is tapered to feel comfortable in every hand position, and particularly good for lead players!

Cherry is realistically the only choice for finish here, and this vintage hue is expertly applied and finished with a gloss coat of nitrocellulose lacquer. This is the look that most people think of when they picture a Gibson SG: classic through and through!

The Sideways Vibrola unit is an attractive decoration as much as it is a functional piece of equipment: the large chromed tailpiece adds a significant amount to this SG’s visual appeal. In use the Vibrola acquits itself well, allowing a few semitones’ worth of vibrato to add colour to your playing. As the name suggests, this is operated by pushing the bar across the face of the guitar, rather than down toward the body. Vintage Deluxe tuners and a Graph Tech nut help prevent any tuning issues potentially caused by every-enthusiastic whammy-ing!

A pair of 61 Burstbucker humbucker give this guitar a rather tightly roar. There is plenty of output available here whist still retaining a vintage tonality. The SG fits in well with pretty much any musical line-up, having both the heat for Rock and the clean spank for funk and other less aggressive styles.

Gibson should be applauded for adding this rather special SG to their Original Collection. SG fans will not have to look at this twice before deciding that it’s a total winner!
