Generally speaking, the Precision bass has a larger, thicker sound than the Jazz bass. The main difference is found in the pickups. While Jazz basses typically have a pair of single coil pickups, the Precision has a split-coil pickup. This actually acts as a humbucker. The pickup provides a thick, wide, compressed tone that is pretty perfect for basslines. Its placement on the body is significant too.
