About Digital Synthesizers

Digital Synthesizers offer a great way to add a wide palette of sounds to a piece of music, and come in many forms at all price points. Some of the main advantages of digital synths are the greater number of notes you can play at once, the versatility, the tuning stability and how much cheaper they are compared to analog synths with comparable features!

There are several different types of digital synthesizers - if you're looking for the iconic sounds that defined the 80's you'll want a synth that offers FM synthesis, such as the Korg Volca FM or Korg Opsix. If you're looking for warm lo-fi sounds you'll probably want an analog-modelling synth like the Korg Multipoly or microKORG. For wilder futuristic sounds there are wavetable synths like the ASM Hydrasynth. Fortunately many modern digital synths contain multiple types of synthesis so you don't have to choose or limit yourself! The Korg Opsix and Yamaha Modwave Series are great examples of this. Almost all digital synths come with a lot of presets too, so there's always great sounds ready to go, and its easy to make small adjustments to without being overwhelmed.

Some digital synths even offer great expressive control over your playing like the Arturia Microfreak with its unconventional touchplate keyboard, or the the Expressive E Osmose with its otherworldly sound engines and expressive keys you can wiggle for vibrato or press harder for changing tones - these are a great choice for anyone (especially guitarists) who feel limited by the expressivity of keyboard instruments!

Why Should I Choose a Digital Synthesizer?

  • Much more cost effective than analog
  • Massive range of sounds
  • Reliable tuning
  • Many great sounding presets

Frequently Asked Questions about Digital Synthesizers

Question: What is a digital synthesizer used for?
A digital synthesizer is a great way to add additional sounds and textures to a piece of music. Whether it's more traditional organ, string or keyboard sounds, classic 80's sounds, or crazy spaceship noises or elaborate sound design.
Question: Are analog or digital synths better?
Digital synths often offer a greater amount of polyphony (more notes at once), a wider array of sounds, and better reliability all at a cheaper price point. Some people prefer the sound of analog, but this is personal preference. Digital synths can definitely do more!
Question: Which has better sound quality, analog or digital synths?
Digital synths will often have a more polished sound, and with modern technology they sound better than ever, and can even replicate some of the idiosyncrasies of analog synths.
Question: Who plays a digital synthesizer?
Many famous artists have played a digital synthesizer, Paul McCartney, Trent Reznor, Geddy Lee, Aphex Twin, Prince, Freddie Mercury just to name a few! They can be heard in every genre of music from metal to pop and dance music.
