What we say:

The iconic Gibson Les Paul really needs no introduction but there are quite a few variations offered in Gibson’s catalogue these days so it’s worth exploring the range in detail to find the model that resonates with you the most and gives you what you need. You’ll definitely find plenty to love!

The ’T’ model here is, as it’s designation may suggest, more traditional than it’s HP stablemate. With the ’T’, Gibson have delivered a guitar that is a classic Les Paul through and through, tweaked with just a few sympathetically added updates to make it fantastic for players who don’t want or need the GFORCE tuners or extra switching options. Let’s have a closer look…

Starting with the top, since it’s gorgeous, we find a great slice of AAA-grade flamed maple. It may be Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler or Paul Kossoff’s fault but whenever most of us think ‘Les Paul’ we tend to associate them with having wonderful figured ‘tiger-stripe’ maple tops so it’s excellent to see such quality timber across the range of ’T’ Les Pauls. The body itself is traditional mahogany but with the ‘Ultra-Modern Weight Relief’ process removing sections, allowing the guitar to be lighter and more comfortably worn. We don’t find that this makes a great difference at all to the Les Paul’s legendary sustain (which is really more to do with volume than anything) so it’s a welcome step from Gibson. This lefty model comes in a rich Bourbon Burst finish, coated luxuriously in nitrocellulose lacquer.

The neck has an asymmetrical slim profile, designed to give you the most comfortable fret access from any point on the neck. A good chunk of rosewood provides a fantastic and ‘proper’ playing surface.

A pair of full-throated Burstbucker Pro humbuckers supply all the heat and sizzle of a great Les Paul with mismatched coils wound around Alnico V magnets for precise vintage purr. It doesn’t stop there though: each of the four control knobs are push/pull switches which allow you to select alternative modes like coil taps for each pickup, phase in or out and also a ‘pure bypass’ choice for taking your signal straight past the tone circuits to the output. This doesn’t in any way affect the look of the guitar but it certainly opens up the sound! Versatility is increased tenfold and you lose nothing in the process: it’s very good to have these circuits not only available but also so accessible.

These beautiful Les Pauls are not designed to be replicas of the past: they are guitars for NOW and the future. Visually you will be satisfied that it’s a traditional Les Paul; sonically you will be treated to the expected classic tones plus a plethora of extra ones; feel-wise you will be unable to put this down!
