What we say:

At A Glance:

The Tone King Gremlin 5 Watt Combo Valve Amp in Turquoise is a compact combo amp with plenty of guts. Living up to its name, the "Gremlin" packs a lot of tone into its 5-watt design. With such a low wattage it makes it easy to crank, and easy to get that saturated power tube tone. But if you're struggling with volume, the Gremlin also comes with Tone King's renowned Ironman Attenuator already built-in!

Features We Love:

2 Channel American Tones

2 inputs, 2 channels, and you'll be hard-pressed to pick a favourite. Channel 1 your rhythm is modelled for classic Blackface tones, and in channel 2 your lead is modelled for equally classic Tweed tones. You can select either channel on its own, use an A/B or A/B/Y switch, or even jump them together for a combination of both tones. All at 5 watts you'll be able to crank the volume and experience every little nuance of tube-driven tone.

Integrated Attenuation

Volume can always be a problem even at 5 watts it might just not be the correct environment to let loose. But with the integrated Ironman II attenuator, you can do just that! Tone King's Ironman II attenuator has received high praise for its natural sounding volume attenuation, using transformers instead of resistors lets you cut your volume right down while still sounding natural. So feel free to crank that volume knob!

Custom Celestion Speaker

An amp like this needs special components. Tone King has worked closely with Celestion speakers to develop a custom speaker that meets all their needs. When you hit your first chord you'll be met with detailed overtones, warm lows, and vocal midrange frequencies all delivered in pristine detail.

Highlights:

  • Modelled after classic American tones
  • Built-in attenuator
  • Classic styling
  • Low wattage

Customer reviews

Overall Rating 5/5 (1 reviews)

The clean tone is full and clear, and the overdriven tone is just classic-sounding. The attenuator helps keep the decibel level down without compromising on tone and pick-reactivity. Despite its minimalist controls, a wide variety of sounds is achievable, particularly as there are two channels - Rhythm (Blackface-like) and Lead (Tweed-like). Which one I select depends on what I'm intending to play, but if you want to switch between channels you'll need a splitter and a footswitch. Last but not least, the finish is amazing and it feels like quality. I went for the turquoise after half a lifetime of staring at black amps. Well done on that score, Tone King. There are more traditional finishes if you prefer the old-school look.
