 Gibson now unveils the Southern Jumbo 40s Original, a model that honors its 1942 lineage while incorporating thoughtful modern refinements. It features the new Gibson-exclusive Baggs™ HiFi DNA™ pickup system, custom-voiced specifically for Gibson acoustic guitars. Building on the familiar foundation of a great J-45, this version elevates performance with solid rosewood back and sides, delivering enhanced low-end depth, sparkling highs, and expansive projection. A solid Sitka spruce top provides a responsive, touch-sensitive feel with impressive dynamic range, and its tonal character continues to develop over time. Multi-ply binding on both the top and back adds a refined visual detail.

The guitar features a mahogany neck shaped in a comfortable SlimTaper profile, allowing for effortless chord work and fluid flatpicking. Its rosewood fretboard carries 20 standard frets and is adorned with classic split parallelogram inlays crafted from mother of pearl.

At the headstock, smooth-operating, nickel-plated Grover® open-back tuners pair with a bone nut for reliable tuning stability. The peghead is finished with a vintage-inspired Gibson script logo decal. The rosewood belly-down bridge, designed with a closed slot, includes two mother-of-pearl dot inlays, a bone saddle, and TUSQ® bridge pins. A tortoise shell-colored teardrop pickguard completes the instrument’s classic aesthetic.

This active design utilizes dual lightweight sensors mounted on the internal bridge plate, each with its own preamp, to deliver a rich, natural, amplified tone that preserves the guitar’s inherent character without affecting its unplugged sound, with comparable gain-before-feedback to an under-saddle pickup.
