About Baritone Guitars

Baritone guitars have a very distinctive sound thanks to their extended range. Many contemporary Metal and Prog artists play in low tunings and these guitars work perfectly for that. Not limited to heavy music, baritone guitars can also be heard on many Country songs, with both acoustic and electric guitars being used.

They have a longer scale length than regular guitars, usually somewhere in the region of 26" to 30". This allows the correct amount of string tension to be achieved for lower tunings.

Chapman, Solar Guitars, and ESP all make models that cater to those who play heavy music and seek a reliable guitar for low tuned riffing. Gretsch offer a great alternative in the form of the G5260 for anyone after a more traditional looking guitar and the Alvarez ABT60 ensures that acoustic players are not left out of the baritone world either.

Why Should I Choose a Baritone Guitar?

  • A distinctive sound
  • Specifically designed for lower tunings
  • Appropriate for a variety of styles
  • Frequently Asked Questions about Baritone Guitars

Question: What is a baritone guitar used for?
Baritone guitars are a great solution for guitarists wanting to use a lower tuning than the traditional E standard. They can be used as a main guitar or to add some extra character to songs that would benefit from being filled out with a lower guitar line.
Question: What tuning is a baritone guitar in?
Lower tunings such as B Standard (B, E, A, D, F#, B) are common for a baritone, depending on the scale length of the guitar. A Standard is even possible for some, providing you are using the appropriate gauge of strings.
Question: Can I put baritone strings on a regular guitar?
Technically yes but we wouldn't really advise doing so. The nut of the guitar may need to be widened to accommodate the thicker gauge strings and the guitar would likely require a setup for achieving correct intonation. That is why most people tend to choose a baritone guitar for lower tunings.
