Gibson guitarguitar EXCLUSIVE AAA Les Paul Standards
Published on 22 May 2025
When you picture a Gibson Les Paul, what is the image in your mind?
Is it a beautiful Les Paul Standard, perhaps with a striking burst finish? Such a vision is a timeless classic and has been since the late 50s when they were created.
Do you also think about it having a wonderfully flamed figured maple top? Like the famous ‘tigerstripe’ guitars you’ve seen played by heroes like Mark Knopfler and Jimmy Page? I get it: we are talking about the stuff of musical mythology here, after all!
The good thing is, owning a piece of that mythology is maybe more attainable that you thought…

50s and 60s Models: What’s the Difference?
What is a Gibson AAA Les Paul Standard?
- Classic Les Paul vibes with stunning tops
- Triple A figured beauty
- Choice of styles and finishes
Today, I’d like to show you some special - and exclusive - Les Paul Standards. These are full-fat, Made in the USA Gibson Les Paul Standards in two guises - 1950s and 1960s - with one extra special feature: a spectacular AAA grade figured maple top!
Traditionally, Les Pauls have been made with mahogany bodies, capped off with a slice of maple on the top. The maple is used to brighten the tone and offer a surface for shaping into the carved ‘dish’ top that contributes to the Les Paul’s timeless good looks.
These particular guitars have been upgraded with tops that are triple A - AAA - rated for wow factor, making them some of the most beautiful guitars we have for sale! They don’t cost too much more than a regular Les Paul Standard either, and their obvious beauty makes them really rather special to comprehend! The Les Pauls of your dreams!
50s and 60s Models: What’s the Difference?
- 50s necks are chunky
- 60s necks are slimmer and tapered
- Different pickup models on each version
So, as I mentioned, there are two varieties of Les Paul Standard here, and each is available in multiple finishes. I’ll get to the finishes in a second, but here are the facts you need to know about the guitar models…
- Solid, non weight-relieved mahogany bodies for both varieties, just like the good old days!
- Hand wired electronics, including Orange Drop capacitors on all models
- 50s Les Paul models have larger vintage 50s necks, in keeping with historical examples
- 60s Les Paul models have slimmer, tapered necks, also sticking to history
- 50s LPs have Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups (alnico II magnets for a warmer sound)
- 60s LPs have 60s Burstbuckers, which have alnico V magnets for a brighter tone
In a nutshell, the 50s models have slightly warmer tones and bigger necks, and the 60s ones have slightly slimmer necks and brighter sounding pickups.
Finishes
- Three colours available
- All Burst finishes that show off the AAA maple tops
- Colours available on both styles of guitar
So, these guitars all have spectacular slices of flamed maple on top of their bodies, so it makes sense to coat them in finishes that amply show the wood off, right?
We’ve got three different options for you, which are available on both the 50s and 60s models (apart from Heritage Cherry Sunburst, which is only only the 50s AAA Les Paul model). This is great news, since you mostly won’t have to compromise the look you prefer for the neck you want, and vice versa. Here’s a look at each of the finishes…
Heritage Cherry Sunburst
Lemon Burst
Bourbon Burst
What’s your favourite? Heritage Cherry Sunburst is the definitive, default burst for a classic looking Les Paul, but I think all three of these are very appealing indeed! Each one has its own special look thanks to the AAA top, and each one will be a real talking point when you bring it out on stage!
