Schecter’s Hellcat VI is an original take on the ‘Bass VI’ style instrument that uses a longer (30”) scale length and heavy gauge strings (24 to 90!) to produce a six string guitar that is tuned an octave lower than a standard guitar.
This type of instrument is fairly niche but fans of surf music, Twin Peaks and The Cure will instantly recognise that distinctively rich low end sound that is truly unique!
Schecter have gone for a Swamp Ash body here: this resonant tone wood is a great choice for adding some snap and focus to the tone.
That long neck is made of Maple and is bolted to the body (with 5 bolts for extra strength) and topped with a bound Pau Ferro fingerboard. A 12” radius and 22 Extra Jumbo frets let you get stuck in confidently!
In fitting with tradition, Schecter have opted for single coil pickups to give a the correct look. However, these are no normal single coil pickups but in fact Schecter USA hand wound MonsterTone stacked humbuckers! Single coil twang is an important part of the Hellcat sound so there are individual slider switches to turn these excellent coil splittable pickups into true single coils (though taking advantage of the hum cancelling nature of the design) or richer humbucker sounds! You get that vintage look and twang as well as fatter sounds when you want them, all with no hum! Win!
The Hellcat is a great studio instrument for adding an extra dimension to your recordings and arrangements. It won’t replace a traditional bass but it will offer something that no other instrument can and that alone is reason enough to go for it! This one is available in 3 Tone Sunburst Pearl.
