Orchestra Model (OM) Guitars
With a clear and crisp sound, orchestra model (OM) guitars are magnificent for fingerpickers. Martin & Co debuted this size in 1930, and since then they have become a staple of acoustic guitar players all over the world.
Often abbreviated to OM - following Martin’s nomenclature - they are larger than parlour size guitars and have a much richer sound while still retaining the comfort and playability. They don’t have as much bass as a grand auditorium or dreadnought and as such are perfect for more melodic, precise playing.
There is a variant model to the OM known as the 000 or ‘Triple 0’. The body size between these two models is exactly the same; the difference is the ‘scale length’ i.e. the playable length of the strings. The OM scale length is half an inch longer - giving it a rich, piano-like voice - whereas the shorter scale length of the 000 means there is less tension on the strings and, consequently, it is much easier to bend. Eric Clapton’s signature model for example is a 000-28, enabling him to play all his famous blues licks with ease.
Orchestra model guitars are ideal for beginners because they produce a beautiful, rewarding tone without compromising on comfort and playability.
Why Should I Choose an Orchestra Model (OM) Guitar?
