What we say:

The Ibanez RG is one of the most iconic and defining ‘Superstrat’ styles of guitar in existence: indeed, this late 80s design, taken from Steve Vai’s original JEM guitar, has played a large part in the ubiquity of this type of shred machine ever since.

This model, the 550, is part of Ibanez’s Japanese made Genesis range, offering higher production standards and excellent hardware quality. It is also a direct reissue of one of the first legendary RG models. For technical players, an Ibanez RG550 is a thing of myth!

This model typifies the RG with its sharper double cutaway body, pointed headstock and super thin Wizard HP neck. The Maple fingerboard has 24 Jumbo frets and simple dot inlays, something we are glad to see. These days, this is a classic design and we don’t want it messed with!

The RG550 reissue is available in a series of suitably loud finishes, this being Road Flare Red. The matching headstock is a nice touch, too. This is a shredder’s paradise!

Ibanez have gone for their own Vintage pickups, just like the 1987 originals. Arranged in an H-S-H configuration, these units (a V7, an S1 and a V8) actually cover a lot of ground: sonically you can achieve far more than shred tones!

Build quality is typically excellent and if you’re looking for a performance guitar with a degree of provenance about it, the RG550 has you more than covered.

Only floating bridge guitar you'll need. With a new set of Dimarzio pickups this is one of the best guitars every made. The best bridge ever made and top notch craftsman ship. Would highly recommend.

The Ibanez Genesis RGs are great guitars for (at the time of writing) well under £1000, having owned many Prestige and standard model RG I can safely say this is the BEST one of the lot. In the past you would have needed to upgrade pots because they just didn't have decent taper, these work better, the original Edge bridge is better than the Edge Pro, Edge Zero etc and contributes positively to the tone its got resonance (I compared it directly to my Musicman JP6). Many would think to upgrade the stock V7 & V8 pickups to Dimarzios etc but if you have a nice amp there is really no need, it sounded great through all 3 Boogies I put it through (Badlander 25, Mark V and a Maverick) and even better through my Cornell Vintage Brown, don't “upgrade” its not worth the £200+ cost. Id recommend getting the Ibanez Hardcase and a Dimarzio Cliplock strap to complete the guitar. This is as close to vintage reissue as Ibanez get (its not total 87 spec), if it were a Fender you’d pay double.

Absolutely love this guitar! I’ve been lucky enough to acquire some nice guitars in my time, PRS, Gibson, Fender. Recently I got a charvel which sent me down the super strat route. After doing the usual hours of internet research I settled on a Ibanez RG550. Needless to say I was not disappointed and it has quickly become my favourite guitar! Fit and finish on my RG seems perfect and came set up very well, I lowered the action slightly and swapped the tuning pegs for lock in ones to make string changes easier. Pick ups sound good to me but I may swap them out for some DiMarzio ones with red covers!
