About Gibson ES-335

The ES-335 is one of Gibson's most famous guitars. It is a semi-acoustic guitar with two hollow f-holed sides and a solid centre block of maple. Introduced in 1958, the ES-335 has proven itself suitable for Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz and a range of other genres. This makes it one of the most versatile guitar designs available.

The semi-hollow nature of the ES-335 gives it a more open sound while the centre block is used to anchor the pickups and reduce feedback. The ES-335 typically has a pair a humbucker pickups, a tune-o-matic bridge and a 24.75" scale length, making it extremely easy to play. The large, double cutaway body makes it immediately recognisable.

The ES-335 can be seen in hands of players such as Chuck Berry, B.B. King and Alvin Lee. It can even be found in popular culture through Marty McFly! The classic look and sound make it a timeless model that will always be a popular choice.

What Makes The Gibson ES-335 Different?

  • An iconic model from one of the best known guitar brands
  • Equally at home in jazz as it is in rock
  • Has been used be many top musicians for decades
  • Frequently Asked Questions about Gibson ES-335

Question: What is the Gibson ES-335 made from?
Gibson make their ES and other semi hollow (and fully hollow) guitars out of a 3 ply laminate of Maple and Poplar. This is how these guitars have always been made, right back to the 1950s. Semi hollow models have solid blocks down the middle of the inside made from Maple.
Question: Where are Gibson ES-335 guitars made?
All Gibson guitars are made in the USA and the ES-335s are made at their Nashville factory. Gibson used to make their ES-335 guitars in Memphis, Tennessee, but this facility is now closed.
Question: What does 'ES' stand for? And what about the '335' part?
'ES' stands for 'Electric Spanish'. This term was originally used to indicate that the guitar should be played in the 'normal' Spanish fashion rather than flat on the player's lap as is common in Hawaiian guitar styles (EH models by Gibson- Electric Hawaiian) which were extremely popular back in the 50s. '335' is actually what the guitar cost back in 1958: $335. Bargain!
Question: What pickups are in a Gibson ES-335?
Most ES-335 models feature a pair of humbuckers that are often based on the original PAF humbuckers that Gibson made. You can find models with different pickups though, such as a pair of P-90s.
