What we say:

At A Glance:

This Gibson Custom Shop 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue is a fantastic recreation of a rock classic. Taking yet another hugely iconic instrument from Gibson's rich history and reissuing it in an authentically accurate manner, they have once again completely nailed it. The 1960s SG has been the instrument of choice for a wide variety of influential guitarists ranging from Angus Young and Tony Iommi to George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Using all solid woods, historic hide glue construction methods and the best vintage replica parts, you'll swear you are playing the real thing.

Features We Love:

Slim Taper Neck

The 1960 Slim Taper profile on the solid mahogany neck isn't only accurate but also incredibly beneficial. It isn't as chunky as some other necks but still offers enough size to feel full and supportive while being easy to navigate around. A truly authentic piece of wonder that gives an excellent balance!

Custombucker Alnico III Pickups

Gibson have not stopped at the aesthetics but have made sure that the pickups here also perform to the same high standard as the guitar itself. Taking influence from PAF tones, they offer a warm, well balanced and full sound. This means they handle clean tones just as well as when you apply some gain, which we know only too well you'll likely be doing with an SG!

Solid Mahogany

Just like the originals, this has a 1 piece solid mahogany body and a solid mahogany neck. This brings to life the legendary natural tone that only solid woods can create. Full of sustain and might, this is the real deal; the rock and roll SG powerhouse that we grew up staring at in complete awe!

Who Is It For?

Players who are after a top of the line guitar, this guitar is a fantastic homage to classic SG's and provides a great tone thanks to the Custombucker pickups.

Highlights:

  • A highly authentic recreation of a classic SG
  • Excellent attention to detail from the craftspeople at Gibson Custom Shop
  • A chance to own the iconic SG in its full retro glory at a non-vintage price

Customer reviews

Overall Rating 5/5 (3 reviews)

I bought the Custom Shop SG after owning a 61 standard SG with a maestro vibrola. I liked this guitar but felt the pickups were a bit hot and the maestro, although it looked cool, got in the way. However I was hooked on an SG, great access to upper frets and a lighter weight compared to a Les Paul. I then looked at the 61 Historic and was taken by the tone of alnico III pickups. Overall I loved the vintage vibe, the attention given to recreating the specs of an original 61 SG and the comfortable neck profile. These guitars are expensive compared to the standard SG but overall I feel it’s worth it if you afford it, a definite step up. Don’t expect much bling for your money with this guitar it’s all about the vibe and the details - a great guitar and a keeper!m
