So what's the solution?

The main reason we see premature wear to guitar frets isn’t just because they’ve had hours and hours of playing lovingly hammered into them, it’s because the dirt and grime that builds up on the underside of your strings through everyday use acts like a corrosive paste between your old, tired strings and your beautiful pride and joy frets.

Over time - and not as long as you may think - the fret can develop a pitting mark at the point of contact with the string. If this pitting or wear becomes too deep, you have effectively lowered the height of that fret, which, in turn, will mean you have restricted the clearance for the string to pass over the next fret. You can tell right away when the string has run out of room as it results in the dreaded fingerboard buzz we guitarists hate with a passion.

If you have noticed that your strings have started to sound dull, or your guitar’s tuning is starting to slip more often, or your intonation isn’t quite as accurate as it used to be, then it’s usually time to change your strings.
