What we say:

BOSS’s colourful stomp boxes are the most recognisable pedal range in existence. For over 40 years, guitarists from bedrooms to stadiums have put their boot down on a BOSS effect to transform their sound. Several models have passed into guitar legend and early examples can fetch extremely high prices. Happily, BOSS have maintained their stellar reputation for world-class effects in bomb-proof casing with their current range and have fended off the imitators for decades to remain the pre-eminent single pedal effects manufacturer in the business. If there’s an effect for guitar (or bass, vocals, keys…be creative!) then you can bet BOSS have a pedal of it in their range or even invented it outright! Every guitar player should get to experience the joy of selecting a pedal from BOSS’s exhaustive roster, plugging it in and unleashing their wildest sonic dreams.

Lots of guitarists underestimate the power they can hold with a simple graphic EQ pedal like this GE-7. Boosting for solos, cutting out problem frequencies, reshaping the natural sound of the guitar (i.e. cutting away the bottom end of an LP or boosting the lower mids of an S-type): there are loads of powerful ways you can take advantage of an EQ pedal!

One of our favourite tricks with an EQ pedal is to dial in your biggest, heaviest, crunchiest setting on your amp and then use the EQ pedal to dial back everything (whether it's all flat or whether you drop out some low end) lower and keep it switched on for most of your song, only turning it off to unleash the full volley of your amp's natural drive and size! It's backwards to how EQ's are normally used but it can be devastatingly effective!

There is a whole bunch of boost and cut available here: 15dB either way, in fact! with an EQ curve of 100Hz to 6.4kHz, it more than covers the frequency range of a standard electric guitar. There is no one way to use a graphic EQ pedal but every guitarist will find a benefit in using one.

Specification

The GE-7 Equalizer pedal offers seven bands of EQ ranging from 100Hz to 6.4kHz, ideal for guitar sounds, with boost/cut of +/- 15dB per band. This lets you completely control your sound and eliminate unwanted feedback, particularly when connected after a distortion effect.
  • Compact EQ pedal with 7 bands of adjustable EQ sliders
  • Allows for boost/cut of up to +/- 15dB per band
  • Perfect as a "boost" pedal for solos, creating an alternate sound, or for eliminating feedback

The usual robust, well-designed Boss pedal that does what it is supposed to do (Boss GE-7 Equaliser, so not very dramatic or exciting, but very useful). Can be used with a flat EQ as a straight gain boost but works best for solos with edge and body added to the tone as well. Noticeably cheaper than an MXR Micro Amp Plus, too...
