What is the difference between a synthesizer and a keyboard?

The word "keyboard" is often used to refer to what we call a portable keyboard. These are more affordable synthesizers that generally used by beginners to get into playing. They feature a wide range of sounds that usually can't be edited. They're an excellent gateway into playing music, but unlike synths, they are generally not used in live performances or on studio recordings.

Can you learn piano on a synthesizer?

Many people get into playing keys on a synthesizer. However, because synths generally don't feature weighted keys like a piano, it's not an ideal way to learn piano if you intend on taking graded exams. If you intend on learning piano grades, we'd recommend investing in a digital piano.

Can I use a synthesizer as a MIDI controller?

Yes, most synths feature either 5-Pin or USB midi so you can easily connect it to your computer or hardware.

Do you need an amp for a synthesizer?

Most digital synthesizers don't feature built-in speakers, so at home, you may get by by using headphones or studio monitors. For the rehearsal room, it's worth investing in a keyboard amp so you can be heard over the other instruments. If you're playing live you should check with the venue beforehand to see if the PA system is powerful enough to amplify your synth setup. If it's not, you will need to bring an amp.
