At A Glance:
This Yamaha Billy Sheehan Attitude Limited III in Black represents decades of innovation. Billy is regarded as a true original and is loved for his continuing evolution in style, tone and technique. For 30 years the Attitude has been a part of his evolution and this new model represents a combination of Billy's own innovations and Yamaha's cutting edge technology.
There's a lot packed into this world-class instrument, including custom pickups (each with its own output), a custom neck profile with a miter bolting joint, a mix of jumbo and scalloped frets and a Hipshop "D" tuner. The guitar has also been processed with Yamaha's Acoustic Resonance Enhancement and Initial Response Acceleration technologies to give the acoustic qualities of a vintage instrument.
You don't need to be able to play like Billy Sheehan to use this bass, but you know that whatever you want to do will sound its absolute best with this guitar!
BodyThe 3-piece Alder body uses a spline joint through the centre of the guitar to join the 3 pieces together. This excites string resonance through the body to create that signature vibrant and loud tone that makes this guitar so special.
The maple neck features a signature profile that uses mass to produce sustain, although chunky it comfortably fits your hand. It's joined to the body using 3 screws at the conventional backplate area and two miter bolts set at an angle to give extreme strength to the neck joint, and to transfer resonance and string vibration from the neck to the body and vice versa. Finally, the fretboard features jumbo frets from 1st to the 16th fret and scalloped frets from fret 17 to 21. The result is a vibrant guitar that's a dream to play, whether holding the low end or shredding some tasty licks, it always offers peak performance.
Pickups and Outputs
A key part of Sheehan's tone comes from the pickup selection. A feature he stumbled upon with his famous "The Wife" bass in the 70s, Billy took a Gibson pickup he liked the sound of and added it to the neck position of his guitar. Not knowing how to wire it into his guitar, he simply added a separate output jack to his bass. This meant he could run the neck pickup and split-coil pickup in the bridge position each to a separate amp. With the neck pickup, he only dials in the lowest frequencies and he then uses the bridge pickup to bring in some high-frequency definition, with a bit of grit. The Attitude uses this same configuration with his fantastic signature DiMarzio pickups, and the stereo output can also be summed to a mono signal for those only looking to use one amplifier.
