Frequently Asked Questions about Yamaha Speakers

Question: Are Yamaha speakers passive or active?
We stock Active speakers from Yamaha's DBR and DXR ranges, and also their Stagepas PA systems which are technically passive, but are provided with an amplifying mixer as standard.
Question: What's the difference between a floor monitor and a PA speaker?
While PA speakers offer a wide and flat frequency response to project great sound to your audience, floor monitors are only used by the musicians on stage and discard the frequencies most prone to feedback. Yamaha speakers feature their 'D Contour' technology, allowing you to use the speakers for either front of house use or as floor monitors by selecting the preferred use via the switch on the back of the speaker.
Question: What's the difference between DBR and DXR speakers?
Both the DBR and DXR range of speakers are constructed to premium quality standards, but there are some key differences between the two. The DBR range are Yamaha's most portable line of active speakers, they are available in three sizes (10"", 12"" and 15""), feature lightweight high impact enclosures and 1000w of power (700w in the DBR10). Each speaker hosts two input channels, one of which features a preamp for microphone use. These are amazing quality speakers and feature custom designed transducers that allow low distortion, high output sound. The DXR range are a step up from the DBRs, available in four sizes (8”, 10”, 12” and 15”), feature 1100w power amplifiers and more robust transducers. Yamaha worked closely with French speaker manufacturer Nexo at their state of the art design facility to craft and refine their speaker designs to offer enhanced clarity with minimal distortion. These loudspeakers feature outboard A/D converters to reduce noise and improve dynamic range, as well as cabinets constructed from an ABS composite material to offer high rigidity and eliminate cabinet induced distortion. DXR speakers feature a 3 channel mixer, including 1 microphone and 2 stereo inputs, plus a 'link' output, which allows a connection to another DXR speaker with one XLR cable for full stereo separation of stereo signals.
